Visiting Beta Bugs, Scotland

In a world of Zoom, Microsoft Teams and the rest, just how valuable is face-to-face interaction?

On Friday I had the opportunity to visit Beta Bugs Limited, a ground-breaking company specializing in black soldier fly genetics. Beta Bugs' primary focus is on selecting the most advantageous genetic traits for the BSF, such as reducing larvae development time and increasing their mass, as well as boosting the number of eggs per female.

Needless to say, their initial results have been nothing short of remarkable, as they have successfully improved upon all of these factors with the “HiPer Fly” product. Having done the calculations myself, this development has a significant positive impact on the yield potential and overall profitability for black soldier fly producers. It is a giant step forward for the industry.

To get to Beta Bugs, I had to endure a 12-hour round trip, but the knowledge and insights gained from the visit were invaluable. Beyond the sheer convenience of technology, being physically present in the Beta Bugs facility allowed me to witness the meticulousness and dedication that goes into their research and development processes. I was able to engage in meaningful conversations with the scientists and researchers. Their enthusiasm and passion were contagious, and I left with a profound sense of awe and admiration for their work.

In an age where virtual meetings and online communication platforms have become the norm, this visit reminded me of the unrivalled value of face-to-face interaction. While technology certainly facilitates connectivity, there is something uniquely enriching about being in the same physical space as others, sharing the same air and energy. It creates an environment where ideas flow more freely, and relationships are built on a deeper, more personal level.

Of course, I also took advantage of this trip to indulge in some leisure time, enjoying a rugby match and cherishing some quality father and son bonding moments.
