Fly2Feed founder David Tavernor

As part of his Nuffield Farming Scholarship, David has been to over 50 black soldier fly business’s across 4 different continents. He has spoken to investors, scientists, technology providers and government officials and, quite simply, wanted to find out the best way to commercially farm black soldier flies.

On this journey, David has experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of the industry and can competently articulate how your idea can maximise the likelihood of success. He has seen how start-ups have successfully pivoted, how a value hypothesis can be formulated and the building blocks of a robust and scalable business model.

He is now understanding how this can be applied to a local context, having experienced a multitude of business models around the world.

David understands the agri-food chain through 7 years of experience as a commercial buyer at the UK’s largest supermarket, Tesco. Whilst he also has experience at a VC backed start-up in London, learning the do’s and don'ts of scaling an ambitious business.

Case studies

Flamingo Produce

Flamingo were currently composting their vegetable waste, but wanted to explore processing this through BSF. This is how we contributed to their project:

  • Drew up physical site plan.

  • Calculated total investment required, including capital and operating costs.

  • Calculate overall benefits vs composting

Tambuzi were already producing, utilizing their own green waste to process into BSF for their pigs, but production was challenging. This was our contribution to their project:

  • Problem diagnosis through on-site observation and consultation.

  • An improvement plan was devised.

  • Tambuzi delivered the step changes to positive results.
